Lending a Hand

For more than five years years, Amarillo Area Mothers of Multiples members have lent a helping hand each Tuesday evening at the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Northwest Texas Hospital.

The Ronald McDonald Room helps families in need every day, and AAMOM is proud to play a part.

Every Tuesday evening, you can find a member of the Amarillo Area Mothers of Multiples Club manning the Ronald McDonald Family Room, located on the third floor of Northwest Texas Hospital, conveniently close to the neonatal intensive care and intensive care units.

The Family Room is manned entirely by volunteers, and AAMOM decided collaboratively in 2008 that a Tuesday evening shift was a great way to support families with children in the hospital. This volunteer opportunity was especially appropriate, because many AAMOM members depended on the NICU – at least briefly – when their twins and triplets were born.

The Family Room opened Sept. 21, 2000, and according to a recent interview with the Amarillo Globe News, “We are their place to get away,” said Sally Strange, the room’s volunteer coordinator since its beginning. “If you spend too much time in an ICU room, it can get very depressing and the walls start to close in on you

“One lady said to me, ‘Do you know what the family room is? It’s my excuse. I can’t leave my child unless I have an excuse, but I can say I am going to the family room to get some coffee.'”

About 200,000 visitors have signed in since the room’s inception. The room offers a kitchen and dining area with snacks, coffee and soft drinks. There’s a comfortable living area with a television and shelves with books. The facilities include a computer, shower, washer/dryer and even a quiet room – a sanctuary for families to pray, reflect or grieve.

The Family Room is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week. If you’d like information about volunteering, please contact an AAMOM board member.
